Waterford Greenway Opens
The Waterford Greenway officially opens on Saturday the 25th of March. The new greenway and is going to make the way that we can see the sights and beauty of Waterford a real unique experience for walkers and cyclists. Starting at Waterford city it extents 45 kilometres to Dungarvan, in the west of the county, travelling through some of Ireland’s most scenic landscapes.
But you don’t have to start at the beginning! You can join the Waterford Greenway at lots of different points along the way. See the map below and you can download it HERE.
What will you see along the way?
Well there is so much! Leaving Waterford you will travel along the majestic River Suir along an area where the Viking’s first landed in Waterford around 850AD and you will be travelling alongside the track of the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway. Passing the beautiful gardens of Mount Congreve (which is open every weekend from Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 4.30pm). There are plans to have an entrance into Mount Congreve which should be open in the next month or two.
The Waterford Greenway will bring you towards the beautiful town of Kilmacthomas and it’s formidable viaduct and it’s awe inspiring views of the Comeragh Mountains. Kilmacthomas is the home of Flavans the porridge makers and it’s a great place to stop off for a bite to eat or a cuppa. From Kilmacthomas you will travel over the new bridge on the N25 and here you will see the old Famine Relief Work House. Here you will find birds of prey, exhibitions, artesian products and a café. Full of history the Work House is well worth a visit.
Onwards towards Dungarvan you will travel over the Durrow Viaduct before you pass through the Ballyvoyle Tunnel which is over 400 metres in length and over the Ballyvolye viaduct which will bring you to the sea and the amazing views of Dungarvan Bay, Helvic head and An Rinn (Waterford’s Irish Speaking area or Gaeltacht).
When you arrive at Dungarvan you will be delighted with the beautiful townscape with its fantastic offering of restaurants, bars, café’s and hotels.
So, what’s happening on Saturday the 25th of March at the Waterford Greenway?
Well, Saturday the 25th of March marks the official opening of the Waterford Greenway and there are lot’s of activities happening in Waterford at the WIT West Campus, Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan. Here are some of what’s going on!
There is also entertainment.
And there will be great fun in Kilmacthomas
