Waterford Suir Valley Railway

Waterford Suir Valley Railway is a heritage narrow-gauge railway in Kilmeadan, Co. Waterford, offering a scenic train journey through the beautiful Suir Valley alongside the Waterford Greenway and River Suir.

Operating along part of the former Waterford to Dungarvan railway line, the experience combines railway heritage, countryside views and family fun from the beautifully restored Kilmeadan Station.

For families, railway enthusiasts or anyone looking for something a little different to do in Waterford, it’s an enjoyable way to discover a part of the Suir Valley that is largely accessible only by train or the neighbouring Greenway.

What is the Waterford Suir Valley Railway?

The Waterford Suir Valley Railway is a community heritage railway and social enterprise dedicated to preserving Waterford’s railway history.

A narrow-gauge railway runs along 10km of the abandoned Waterford–Dungarvan railway line, with regular passenger journeys beginning and ending at Kilmeadan Station.

Kilmeadan Station itself has been carefully restored. The platform dates from 1878, while the original Kilmeadan Station sign is displayed there and a converted Irish Rail carriage serves as the ticket office.

What Can You Experience?

The regular railway experience is a leisurely 12km return journey lasting approximately 40 minutes, travelling at around 15–16km/h.

On Saturdays, the journey is extended to approximately 50 minutes, continuing through the Dan Donovan Tunnel towards the toll plaza for the Thomas Francis Meagher Bridge.

The slower pace is part of the attraction.

Rather than simply getting from one place to another, you can sit back and enjoy the scenery, railway heritage and views across the Suir Valley.

Travel Along the River Suir

Much of the railway follows the picturesque River Suir, running beside the Waterford Greenway.

Along the journey you’ll see rolling countryside and views across the river towards County Kilkenny.

Look out for the ruins of Kilmeadan Castle, the historic lime kilns and glimpses into Mount Congreve Gardens.

The route provides a completely different perspective on this part of Waterford.

Discover the Magic Wood

For younger passengers, one of the highlights is the Magic Wood.

The train passes through a woodland glade said to be home to fairies and leprechauns, with children encouraged to look carefully among the trees and make a wish as they pass.

Children can also receive a treasure hunt sheet when checking in at Kilmeadan Station.

Discover Waterford’s Railway Heritage

There’s more to the attraction than the train journey.

Around Kilmeadan Station, Story of Rail displays explore the importance of Ireland’s railways and their influence on areas including transport, emigration, industry, sport and social history.

The railway itself is operated as a social enterprise and registered charity, with income reinvested in preserving and developing the heritage attraction.

Is Waterford Suir Valley Railway Family Friendly?

Yes – this is one of the most family-friendly attractions in Waterford.

The train journey is short enough for younger children while still providing plenty to see along the route.

The railway also operates special seasonal experiences and family events at different times of the year, including summer activities and seasonal trains.

At Kilmeadan Station there’s also a children’s play area, toilets, outdoor seating and the Whistlestop Café.

Combine it with the Waterford Greenway

One of the best things about the railway is its location alongside the Waterford Greenway.

Around 10km of the Greenway between Bilberry and Kilmeadan runs beside the railway, making Kilmeadan Station a useful stopping point for walkers and cyclists.

Bike parking, a bicycle pump and water station are available at the station.

This makes it possible to combine a railway journey with some time walking or cycling the Greenway.

Whistlestop Café

Before or after your train journey, stop at the Whistlestop Café at Kilmeadan Station.

The café serves refreshments, sandwiches, cakes, snacks and ice cream, with indoor and outdoor seating available.

There are also toilets, free parking and bike parking at the station.

Is the Railway Accessible?

The railway has wheelchair-accessible compartments, although it’s a good idea to mention your requirements when booking.

Kilmeadan Station also has designated accessible parking and a wheelchair-accessible toilet.

Because most train compartments are partially open, the railway recommends wearing warm clothing – even when the weather seems reasonable.

Waterford In Your Pocket Tip

Combine the railway with the Waterford Greenway or Mount Congreve Gardens and turn the train journey into a bigger day out.

The railway, Greenway and Mount Congreve all occupy the same beautiful stretch of the Suir Valley, so they work particularly well together.

And if you have a real interest in railways, Saturday is worth considering. The regular Saturday journey is longer and continues through the Dan Donovan Tunnel towards the Thomas Francis Meagher Bridge.

One other tip: bring an extra layer. Much of the train is partially open, and travelling alongside the River Suir can be breezy.

What Can I Do Nearby?

The most obvious combination is the Waterford Greenway, which runs alongside the railway.

Mount Congreve Gardens is another excellent nearby attraction. With prior arrangements, the railway even provides options for passengers to disembark at the Mount Congreve platform and return on a later train. Separate admission applies.

You can also continue along the Greenway towards Kilmacthomas, or travel back towards Waterford City and explore the Viking Triangle, Waterford Treasures and House of Waterford Crystal.

For families, we’d particularly consider:

Waterford Suir Valley Railway → Whistlestop Café → short cycle or walk on the Waterford Greenway.

If your outing continues into Waterford City after the railway, browse Where to Eat in Waterford for restaurants and pubs serving food. These city venues are a separate stop from Kilmeadan Station; plan your transport and check kitchen hours before travelling.
