Chef Ellie Kisyombe set for host a seasonal long-table dinner at GIY’s GROW HQ next week
On December 5th, Ellie Kisyombe will be joining the crew in GROW HQ for the third homegrown evening an occaiosn where visiting chefs who share the homegrown ethos. The event showcases their talents as they deliver a very special seasonal feast for just 55 diners. Each ticket includes a 4-course dinner and a complimentary drink on arrival.
Prepare for a night filled with delicious food, culture and best of all – a good cause. Ticket proceeds will be donated to Ellie’s wonderful cause, facilitating change and correcting the flaws in the direct provision model through food.
Ellie Kisyombe is a mother, activist, chef and Co-Founder and Director of Our Table. Originally from Malawi, Ellie has been seeking asylum in Ireland for the past nine years. Her family was driven to empower marginalised people at home, and she has carried this same passion for social justice and equality with her to Ireland.
In 2015 Ellie established Our Table, a non-profit that helps refugees and asylum seekers gain skills and employment. Our Table fights to end the harmful system of Direct Provision through the celebration of food and culture. Because of this work, Ellie was invited to be a guest of Darina Allen in Ballymaloe, where she completed a 12-week culinary certificate course. She did this while being hosted and cooking with Darina at her home in Ballymaloe.
In 2016 Ellie was in an award winning radio drama ‘Flight Risk’ which won the Gold Award for Best Drama Special in New York Radio Awards and was nominated for the Prix Europa Berlin, Irish Radio Awards, and the Prix Italia Milan. In 2018 Ellie was featured as part of Dublin City Council Culture Company’s ‘Local Heroes’ and announced her candidacy for Dublin City Councillor for the Social Democrats Dublin Central. She was also featured alongside other Irish activists in Hozier’s video for ‘Nina Cried Power’.
To show their appreciation for the cause, GIY will be donating €5 per ticket to ‘Our Table’ to help raise funds for a new van to enable them to continue to carry out their great work. In 2019 the homegrown series will continue with events featuring Russell James Alford and Patrick Hanlon, Gastro Gays as homegrown will take a turn towards the anarchic, food-obsessed home-cook with Eurovision and travel-obsessed food blogging duo Russell James Alford and Patrick Hanlon. Chef Katie Sanderson will also feature; a chef who specialises in pop-up experiences and happenings that are fleeting and exceptional, including her Living Dinners Project, a series of monthly happenings where diners were served only raw food in a varying series of spaces. Born in Hong Kong, trained at Ballymaloe Cookery School, chef at The Fumbally, GIY can’t wait to see what she magics in GROW HQ.
