Clean Coasts Big Beach Clean in An Rinn a success

“The Clean Coasts Big Beach Clean on the beaches of An Rinn Waterford scheduled for Saturday September 28 was a great success, with the least amount of rubbish ever needed to be gathered” said an Rinn resident Seamus Phelan.

The beaches were pretty good to begin with, as the public in general, have become kinder to our environment and also due in a large part to the efforts of our oyster farmers and local volunteers who constantly pick up rubbish on the beaches year round, including Seamus and his wife Maeve.

The Clean Coasts Big Beach Clean was organised by Coiste Maisithe na Rinne – Ring Peninsula Community Group (CMR) and An Taisce Clean Coasts in conjunction with the Environment Section of Waterford Council.  “We are grateful to Johnsie Manahan, local oyster producers, the local media, SPAR An Rinn, and all who turned up to help” said CMR Hon Press Sec Joan Clancy.

The issue of litter in our oceans, rivers and lakes and its harmful effects on marine life is very much in the media these days, and our volunteers completed a marine litter survey using the Clean Coasts data form to input the results.
The sides of the road from Robert’s Cross to Helvick were also cleaned by CMR members Mary Tobin and Cait Uí Chonghaill.
“We recognise the splendid civic commitment of many local people who regularly collect rubbish year round, on the beaches, car parks and roadsides of An Rinn” said Ann Kenneally, Hon Sec., CMR.
