‘24 hours to dance’ and rich programme of Theatre, Comedy and Performance at Imagine Arts Festival
Waterford’s Imagine Arts Festival annually offers a rich variety of theatre and dance during its annual festival and the 2019 programme is no different with comedy, plays, theatre and dance performances galore set to be showcased at venues across the City from October 18th to 27th.
A host of theatre and dance productions will be on offer including a Youth Dance celebration at the Theatre Royal on October 20th featuring everything from classical ballet to Bollywood and more, plus ‘24 Hours to Dance’ will see four professional dancers shown a venue on Tuesday, October 22nd and the next evening the audience will see the results of their improvisation in a very special and unique venue. The location will be revealed to the audience by email on Tuesday and announced on social media. Located in Waterford City, spaces are limited and booking essential. The four fearless dancers include Trish Murphy, Tobi Omoteso, Rachel Ní Bhraonáin and Robyn Byrne.
‘Madhouse’ will be presented by Outcast Theatre at the Theatre Royal on October 23rd a production written by Una Hackett and PJ Gallagher, starring Katherine Lynch and Shane O’Reilly. The production is based on the unbelievable true-life story of comedian PJ Gallagher. When PJ was ten, his Ma, a nurse, moved six men with schizophrenia into the family home to care for them full time!
‘A Modern Day Parable’ will be presented at St Patric’s Gateway on October 23rd, offering a family-friendly production that brings the audience on a magical journey through life, experiencing the beauty and the richness of self-awareness and discovery. Bursting with live music, dance, and colour, the eclectic mix of instruments, sounds, and movement will immerse the audience into an unforgettable experience. The music is written and performed by Karen Hegarty, Dean Flynn and Marian Ingoldsby, choreography and performance by Ruth Flynn, and featuring, Magdalena Karol, Dean Gallagher, and Richard Cruise.
At 1 pm on October 23rd, Garter Lane will host composer/musician, Nick Day & Dee Grant (Dance Artist in Residence 2019, Garter Lane Arts Centre) will offer a taste of music and dance, Moving Under Skies. A lunchtime performance sharing based on their new work; Dee is exploring this work as a dance film about ageing with an inter-generational cast in Waterford to be filmed later this year. This new film will be part of her residency and this performance will present excerpts and shine a light into this new work.
Comedy also headline at this year’s festival with stand up legend Kevin McAleer as he brings his new show ‘Guru’ to town; audiences can join Lama Kevin for an evening of living hilariously in the moment, with meditation, mindfulness, deep breathing!
At Garter Lane Theatre on October 24th Waterford Youth Arts Film will premiere ‘Who Cares’ a short film [drama] about two children who must care for their mother and themselves. Shot in St. Johns Park and with an all Waterford cast it looks at the stress and survival instincts of two young people who must cope with whatever is thrown at them.
A variety of over 80 events are on offer for the 18th annual Arts Festival which takes place this October 18th to 27th 2019. 55% of the programmed events are on offer free of charge. Three of Waterford’s finest festivals are rolled into one under the umbrella of the Imagine Arts Festival, including the Waterford Writers Weekend along with the John Dwyer Trad Weekend an eclectic and international events programme to choose from under Imagine Arts which celebrates theatre, dance, music, visual art, discussion and debate.
