Waterford, Where I Live 2!
With camera in hand, there is nothing like getting out and about in Waterford. Whether its to the coast or to the mountains, a country trail or any event that takes place in the city our our towns, it’s great to be able to capture some of the wonderful places that I have visited over the past few years with Waterford In Your Pocket.
The beauty of getting out and about is it starts with a blank canvas if you will. There are no preconceived ideas or images in my mind, only the anticipation of what the day and the journey may bring. What makes it so easy to take photos for me, is not just the beautiful landscape that we are blessed with here in Waterford or the many festivals that we have throughout the year but the people that are willing to engage at every step along the way. Stories, chats, jokes, banter and even sometimes a sad tail or two all make up the DNA that is Waterford.
Even though the world as we know it is after getting smaller with all our access to the internet and instant information and communication, there is nothing quite like letting your mind wonder and take in the beauty of nature. Looking at the moon reminds me of friends and family both near and far. There’s always a tune in my mind that’s playing “Somewhere out there” each and every time I look at the moon and the words always resonate with me “Somewhere out there, beneath the pale moonlight, someone’s thinking of me and loving me tonight”! But it’s true, where ever we are in the world we’re all looking at the same moon.
The mighty river Suir has brought and taken away so many people from Waterford, it never ceases to amaze me how the ships have changed over or 7,000 year history.
The Waterford Estuary with the power of the Three Sister rivers behind it the Suir, Nore and the Barrow make for an impressive entrance to any harbour and an even grander exit to the Celtic Sea and beyond. The ferocious nature has often been felt along our coast with many a life lost and even though we often look at the beauty of the sea we should also remember that mother nature can change her temperament at any stage.
We often forget that so many people work at sea, sailors and fishermen alike and we often see big container ships docking and unloading their wears from all across the globe and the fishing trawlers leaving on the tide to claim the treasures of the sea and all the work that goes with it. As one fisherman said to me “It’s not a job, it’s a calling”.
The hidden gems that are dotted around Waterford, like the Lafcadio Hearn Gardens in Tramore show us some great community spirit and how when people work together for a common goal can not only enhance where they live but preserve history and heritage for the future.
The Waterford Greenway which will run from Waterford City to Dungarvan will open up a whole unique way to explore Waterford and I can only hope that it will create a lot of happy memories for people and their families.
There is nothing better than watching people enjoying themselves!
But most of all I love coming across the love and the passion that people put into where they live. That makes Waterford special.
