Have you been wanted to retrain, to learn new skills, to take the first step to return to further education or even set up your own business?  Then why not consider Waterford VTOS (Vocational Training and Opportunities Scheme) located in the year of Waterford City in Durands’ Court on Parnell Street?  Waterford VTOS recently celebrated of offering 25 years of quality education and training courses to unemployed adults in Waterford City and the hinterland.

Waterford VTOS offers QQI Level 5 programmes and accreditation for adults aged 21 and over and who are in receipt of an eligible social welfare payments for at least 6 months. You will have the opportunity to return to education and acquire new skills and qualifications and to gain a QQI Level 5 Award over a two year period. Furthermore, Waterford VTOS offers courses unique to the South-East such as Interior Design and if you find inspiration from “Room to Improve”, then this course maybe something for you.
Waterford VTOS also offers courses in Art Craft & Design and Fashion Design & Sewing Skills; where skills are taught which has enabled graduates to set up their own businesses e.g. “Mise“ and “Strong Roots” jewellery  which are sold in the Kite Design Centre. Our Information Processing and Business Administration programme offers Web Authoring, Manual & Computerised Payroll and Bookkeeping and Medical Terminology which allows our graduates to progress to local employment in both the private and public sectors.
Not only will you have a supportive learning environment, you can Keep your Social Welfare Payment for a two year period whilst re-training and gaining a QQI Level 5 Award and this includes Jobseekers Benefit.

  3. An Accommodation Allowance is available for those who wish to relocate to do our programmes.
  4. Computer Support classes English Language Support and Career Guidance are also timetabled to support our learners.

So what will you learn in these courses?

Information Technology & Business Administration with Medical Terminology 5M2067 and 5M2468
This programme focuses on our learners getting a firm foundation and competency in:
Word Processing; Database Methods; Spreadsheet Method; Communications; Business Administration; Manual & Computerised Payroll & Accounts; Desktop Publishing, Marketing *; Web Authoring; * Medical Terminology*. In the second year, students do a three week Work Placement to apply the skills learned in a work place environment.* Options are available contingent on enrolments in Year 2.

Fashion Design & Sewing Skills 5M3865
In the second year of the programme, the students’ organize a Fashion Show & Accessories Exhibition, showcasing the clothes and accessories which they have designed and created. Students can also attend ‘Start your own Enterprise’ Workshops run in conjunction with the Waterford Enterprise Board
The programme focuses on our learners learning the traditional skills of Garment Construction and Pattern Drafting. Embroidery and Printmaking and learning the design skills to design their own collection of clothes with confidence.  (Video goes here)

Art Craft & Design 5M1981
This practical and hands-on course teaches the craft skills of Ceramics; Fused and Stained Glass; Woodcraft and Jewellery making (enamelling, copper and silver work) incorporating the elements of good design. The focus is on teaching crafts skills that can be carried out and developed in a small craft workshop.  In the second year, students learn how to organize craft exhibitions as part of their work experience and attend workshops with the Waterford City Enterprise Board.

Interior Design 5M5054
The Interior Design and Decoration course has proven to be a very popular course. It teaches learners practical Interior Design skills (refurbishment and up-cycling) together with the principles of good design. There is also a strong emphasis on the development of traditional practical skills e.g. paint techniques together with modern design skills of Computer Aided Design and Architectural Drawing.
Not only will you learn new skills and meet new people, but new opportunities will open up to you too.  Whether you decide to go further with you education (WIT, National College of Design, Carlow Institute of Technology) or seek out a new career path, Waterford VTOS gives you the stepping stone to begin.
