It’s Gonna Be a Great Summer!

One City, four stages and 160 events! 2019 will be remembered as a summer of music and arts in Waterford City! The Summer in the City team has put together a fantastic programme for this year with music, family entertainment, art and crafts, comedy, spoken word, workshops, puppet shows, street performance and loads more. Remember everything is absolutely FREE – it’s all ready all you have to do is join in!
This year there are five main areas: Centre Stage in John Roberts’ Square, Waterford Viking Triangle, The Apple Market, ArtBeat and the Churchyard Sessions in Bailey’s New Street and Block Parties in Waterford Cultural Quarter. Full details for each area are below:
Summer in the City
Centre Stage, John Roberts Square
As always, the stage on John Roberts  is at the heart of it all, bringing you the finest bands singing the songs you all know. Every Friday and Saturday expect quality tunes, family fun activities and free facepainting. And let’s not forget the traditional Saturday puppet shows featuring kids’ favourites Mr. Cool and Punch and Judy. Waterford plays host to some of the finest marching bands and concert bands so expect some ‘OOMPAHs’ to kick the music off every Saturday!

The Apple Market
This year for the first time, Summer in the City includes The Apple Market in the heart of Waterford’s Entertainment district, with gigs featuring some of Ireland’s best-established and emerging musicians, stripped back and raw. On Saturday evenings from 6 to 8 pm you can enjoy one of the finest covered outdoor areas in the country.

ArtBeat & The Churchyard Sessions, Bailey’s New Street
From 5pm each Saturday, ArtBeat focuses on emerging original Irish music; in one of the most beautiful settings in Ireland nestled among the historic ruins of French Church. ArtBeat has been a staple of summers in Waterford for many years, and features bands from every genre of music. If you want to see the next Fontaines DC for free before they hit the arenas this is where it is at.
The Churchyard Sessions kick off at 8pm and are brought to you by The Munster Bar and The Reg. This later event looks to the more established musicians, with the cream of the Irish music scene gracing its stage. This year we see the long-awaited Jerry Fish arrival and firm favourites Newfoundland bring their unique stylings to the stage. And don’t forget that our resident DJ DaveyBoy will bring you all the best tunes with his Indie Disco while you sit and enjoy life!

Resident DJ Daveyboy brings you all the coolest tunes, indie anthems and floorfillers to get your feet tapping and your heart racing. Happening June 15, June 22, June 29, July 20, July 27
Friday Acoustic Sessions
Also taking place on Bailey’s New Street, on Friday nights from 8pm you can unwind and enjoy the very best acoustic music with these chilled-out sessions brought to you by The Reg Bar and The Munster Bar. These laid-back sessions take place on June 7, June 14, June 21, July 5, July 19 and August 9 and signal that the weekend has well and truly started…
Block Parties – Waterford Cultural Quarter
Something brand new for 2019 on O’Connell Street, it’s Block Parties! With street bands, brass and high energy on the stage outside Tully’s Bar, these are going to be some fun events! Make sure to pop down early for music, drinks and open-air workshops. Then enjoy the rest of your evening with music ‘al fresco’. From 9pm – 11pm…

Waterford Viking Triangle
2019 sees Summer in the City extend its offering throughout Waterford Viking Triangle with a fantastic programme of creative and entertaining events. Highlights include three ‘Big Events’ on June 1, July 5 and August 17 featuring street performers, artists workshops, music and spoken word events! Around each corner something fun will be happening. Some of the great activities happening in the Viking Triangle include Speakers Corner, Crafter’s Corner, Waterford’s Biggest Colouring Book and Battle of the Bands!
