Henry Downes & Co. is a traditional pub and former wine and spirit merchant at 10 Thomas Street, Waterford. Established in 1797, the family business is known locally as “Downses” and for its own Downes No. 9 Irish whiskey.
A pub with a long history
The business began as a spirit merchant, importing, bottling and distributing wines and spirits. Its rooms, alcoves, traditional furnishings and memorabilia give visitors a sense of that history. The premises extends further back from Thomas Street than its frontage suggests.
Downes No. 9 and things to do
The house whiskey is a particular draw for visitors interested in Irish spirits. Downes has also been known for snooker and billiards, with a squash court on the premises. If you are visiting for a particular facility or event, check its current availability with the pub first.
Music and cultural events have featured here over the years. Consult Downes on Facebook or Instagram for the latest programme.
