Theatre Royal

Did you know that Ireland’s Oldest Continually Operating Theatre is in Waterford City?  Hidden behind the elegant Georgian façade of Waterford’s City Hall on The Mall is one of the city’s great cultural treasures.

Theatre Royal Waterford is described by the venue as Ireland’s oldest continually operating theatre. Its story stretches back to 1784, while the beautiful Victorian auditorium seen today dates largely from a major redevelopment in 1876.

Today, the Theatre Royal remains very much a living theatre, presenting drama, music, comedy, musicals, family entertainment, local productions and touring shows throughout the year. With just 432 seats across three levels, it also offers something increasingly rare – the opportunity to see major performers in a wonderfully intimate historic setting.

What is the Theatre Royal Waterford?

The Theatre Royal is a historic working theatre located on The Mall in Waterford City’s Viking Triangle.

The original complex was designed by renowned Waterford architect John Roberts and included Assembly Rooms and a playhouse/concert hall. The playhouse opened on 26 July 1784, with Shakespeare’s As You Like It forming the main entertainment on opening night.

The theatre was substantially transformed during the Victorian period, with the Theatre Royal as we recognise it today opening on Easter Monday, 17 April 1876.

That combination of Georgian and Victorian architecture gives the building much of its character.

What’s On at the Theatre Royal?

The Theatre Royal presents an extensive programme throughout the year, including:

  • Theatre and drama
  • Live music
  • Comedy
  • Musicals
  • Family entertainment
  • Local productions
  • Tribute shows
  • Educational performances
  • Community productions
  • Talks and special events

The programme mixes touring national and international performers with Waterford artists, theatre companies, musical societies and community productions.

That means the Theatre Royal shouldn’t be thought of simply as somewhere to visit once. Its programme is constantly changing, making it one of the places worth checking whenever you’re looking for something to do in Waterford.

Take a Tour of the Theatre Royal

You don’t necessarily have to attend a performance to experience the building.

The Theatre Royal offers guided venue tours on selected dates, giving visitors an opportunity to discover more about the theatre, its architecture and its extraordinary history. Tours are scheduled rather than operating continuously, so availability should be checked before visiting.

For visitors interested in architecture, performing arts or Waterford history, a tour provides a completely different perspective on the building.

More Than 240 Years of Entertainment

Few Waterford buildings can claim a cultural history like this one.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the theatre and Assembly Rooms became an important centre of Waterford’s social and cultural life.

The venue’s history records appearances or visits by figures including Jenny Lind, Catherine Hayes, Edmund Kean and Oscar Wilde, who lectured at the Theatre Royal in 1881.

During the 20th century, performers and visitors included John McCormack, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Harold Pinter, while the building operated at different periods as both a theatre and cinema.

The Theatre Waterford Refused to Lose

One of the best chapters in the Theatre Royal’s story came during the 1950s.

Financial difficulties led to proposals to close the performance space and convert it into council offices.

Waterford’s theatrical groups and the wider public objected.

A public meeting was held in 1956, the Theatre Royal Society was established and a fundraising campaign followed. The theatre was saved and reopened in March 1958, with actor Cyril Cusack appearing in the premiere of a play about Roger Casement.

That history helps explain why the Theatre Royal is sometimes known locally as “The People’s Theatre.”

It isn’t just a building in Waterford. Generations of Waterford people have performed here, watched shows here and fought to keep it alive.

The Waterford Festival of Light Opera

The Theatre Royal also played a major role in one of Waterford’s best-known theatrical traditions.

In 1960 it hosted the first Waterford Festival of Light Opera, which went on to run for more than 50 years.

The theatre has also been home to generations of Waterford amateur dramatic, operatic, musical and performance groups.

That relationship between professional touring productions and Waterford’s own performers remains an important part of the venue today.

A Beautiful Victorian Auditorium

Part of the pleasure of attending a performance here is simply being inside the theatre.

The Theatre Royal describes the venue as a 432-seat classical Victorian theatre, with seating arranged across three levels around a traditional proscenium stage.

It is considerably more intimate than a modern arena or large concert hall.

That intimacy can make comedy, theatre and live music particularly enjoyable because the audience remains physically close to the performers.

Restored for the 21st Century

Historic doesn’t have to mean stuck in the past.

The Theatre Royal underwent extensive renovation in the 2000s, bringing together elements of the original Georgian building, the Victorian theatre and modern facilities.

Following a closure of almost two years, the restored Theatre Royal officially reopened on 4 November 2009 with a specially commissioned production of Bernard Farrell’s Wallace, Balfe and Mr. Bunn. Further work in 2011 included new dressing-room facilities and restoration of the 18th-century wall behind the stage.

The result is a working modern performance venue contained within a building carrying more than two centuries of theatrical history.

Is the Theatre Royal Family Friendly?

Yes – depending on the performance.

The programme regularly includes family shows, musicals and productions suitable for younger audiences alongside adult comedy, drama and music.

Always check the individual event description and any recommended age guidance before purchasing tickets.

Accessibility

The Theatre Royal provides accessibility information for visitors and encourages customers with specific requirements to contact the Box Office when booking.

Because this is a protected historic building with several seating levels, I’d recommend checking the exact accessibility arrangements for your preferred performance and seating area rather than assuming every part of the building can be accessed in the same way.
