Using your smartphone or tablet, the trail connects 15 locations across Waterford City Centre. Audio stories, historical information and augmented reality at selected stops help bring Waterford’s past to life.

It’s an excellent way to explore Waterford on foot while discovering some of the stories behind the streets, buildings and landmarks you pass along the way.

What is the Waterford Digital Story Trail?

The Waterford Digital Story Trail is a free digital walking trail exploring the history, culture and heritage of Waterford City.

There are 15 stops in the heart of the city centre, including locations such as Reginald’s Tower, Waterford Crystal, the Watchtower and Arundel Square.

At each location, look for the Digital Story Trail signage and scan the QR code using your smartphone. This launches the digital experience connected with that particular location.

Depending on the stop, you’ll find a combination of audio storytelling, written historical facts, timelines and augmented-reality experiences.

Meet Characters from Waterford’s Past

One of the most interesting features of the trail is the way Waterford’s history is told through people associated with the city.

You can hear from Reginald, the Viking ruler associated with Waterford’s foundation, and encounter Thomas Francis Meagher, the Young Irelander who first flew the Irish tricolour in Waterford in 1848.

Waterford’s craft heritage is also represented. Rachel Penrose, wife of Waterford Crystal co-founder William Penrose, appears in a recreation of an 18th-century glassmaking scene, while visitors can also discover the story of Anastasia Fleming, an 18th-century Waterford silversmith.

Rather than simply reading plaques or information panels, the trail uses digital storytelling to help place these people and stories back into the streets where you’re standing.

How Does the Digital Story Trail Work?

You don’t need to download a conventional tour app or join a scheduled guided tour.

The experience is designed primarily for smartphones and tablets. Find one of the Digital Story Trail signs around the city, scan its QR code and follow the digital content on your device.
